What if there was an online ‘trade show’ dating profile?

A little far-fetched? Maybe. But let’s face it – we’re in the relationship business. As such, doesn’t it make sense to have an exhibit engagement marketing partner that’s a good match to your company’s personality?

Picture yourself setting up your “show dating profile,” as you reminisce about the single-show relationships that you’ve experienced in the past. Then, imagine pulling up several profiles of eligible marketing partners who are looking for a longer-term relationship. You gaze at the screen, heart racing. Is that the perfect partner staring back at you?

In my role at MG, I answer a lot of RFP questions. Many of those items ask for the type of information you’d expect: How many offices do you have? How long have you been in business? What services to you offer? Do you subcontract work to others?

Can I suggest a novel departure for your next RFP? Probe your potential partner on the relational items that matter to you. See if their personality is a good fit for your business.

You could ask a simple question like how they would describe the ultimate client/vendor partnership. (See if they use the word vendor – that’s a great gauge of relational IQ!)

Or ask them vague questions that can help you understand how they tick. For example, describe how your team engages during the football season. Give them a novel situation and see how they handle it.

Relationships are serious business, to be sure. But determining how a partner’s personality matches your company culture and your work style can be a great predictor of a truly successful relationship that stands the test of time.
